Trim/Passementerie

Trim is a term used to describe elaborate braids, fringes, and tassels used on pillows/cushions, window treatments, and upholstered furniture

Types of Trim

Applique

Embellishment in which individual pieces of fabric are layered on a ground cloth and stitched in place using embroidery techniques. It is used on drapery treatments, upholstered furniture, and decorative pillows.

Eyelash Fringe

Resembling a brush-fringe, but it is thinner and lighter. Often used to edge pillows or window treatment panels and valances.

Holdback

Used as drapery tie-back

Ribbon Tape Trim

Flat woven trim applied as a border on the skirts of upholstered pieces, as pillow embellishments, lampshades, or to edge window panels and window valences.

Tassel Tie-Back

Single or double tassels attached to a looped cord. Used to dress and hold back curtains from the window.

Welt Cord

Used as decorative embellishment on pillows for finishing cushions, either matching the fabric or as a contrast to furniture upholstery on the cushions to accent the frame of the furniture piece. Usually has a lip used to insert and sew into the fabric seams.

Embroidered Tape

Flat tame trim with an embroidered / stitched design.

Brush Fringe

A decorative border with dense pile of individual threads

Frog

A two-piece closure which is used for decoration, made of cord that is wound in a decorative manner. May be used on upholstered pieces at the corners of a split skirt, and as a decorative embellishment on pillows.

Onion Fringe

Tassels with rounded, dome-shaped tops used on pillows, window treatments and shades.

Rosette

A round decorative embellishment typically made of ribbons and yarns that are sewn or glued into pillows, window valances, and upholstery.

Key Tassel

A single, small tassel attached to a short cord. Used as a decorative element, attached to a key that is placed in a cabinet or drawer front keyhole. Most often used for pillow corners.

Double Welt Cord

Two cords side-by-side.

Bullion Fringe

Long fringe made of hanging strands of twisted rope. 3” fringe can be used for a drapery swag. Longer Bullion Fringe 6”-8” is used on upholstered furniture skirts

Gimp

A narrow, braided or woven trim used to hide staple lines and raw edges on upholstered pieces. Also used as decorative embellishment on pillows or lampshades.

Pom-Pom Fringe

Small balls attached to a cord or tape trim for casual or modern design. Used for pillows, applied to lampshades, and window treatments.

Tassel Trim

Tassels spaced evenly along a border tape. Used to enhance pillows, lampshades and window treatments.

Chair Tassel

Two key tassels are attached to a cord. Usually attached to a loose seat cushion and then tied around the back legs of a chair to keep the cushion in place on the chair. Tassels are often used on pillow corners.

Rope Welt Cord

Twisted threads that create a rope effect trim.
